After You Obtain an ISBN, Protect Your Book With Copyright Registration

Posted on: November 9th, 2018 by Publisher Services

Whether you’re a prolific writer or someone who just starting out, protecting the ownership of your work and registering your work at the US Copyright Office can avoid you massive headaches down the road. Even though the law specifies that your work is protected from the moment you create it, if you ever need to take someone to court over a Copyright issue, registering your work can be that ace up your sleeve that saves you in case someone decides to plagiarize your work.

Many authors nowadays decide to register their work in order to have a public record of it and to own a certificate of registration that will quickly settle any disputes. In addition to locking your protection for your lifetime plus 70 years, registering a copyright within the first 3 months of publishing enables the copyright owner to seek statutory damages and attorney’s fees in federal court.

Bowker and Publisher Services have partnered with Digi-Rights to assist clients with copyright registration due to the technicalities and nuances of the registration process.

Farewell CreateSpace and Hello KDP!

Posted on: October 8th, 2018 by Publisher Services

createspace to kdp

Amazon CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing will soon merge into one service. CreateSpace was an early adopter in print-on-demand publishing and in 2005 they were acquired by Amazon. In July 2016 Amazon launched KDP Print as separate offering which CreateSpace customers will now be required to use. All titles that are currently published through CreateSpace will be automatically moved to the KDP platform. Amazon is allowing a few weeks for authors who have titles through CreateSpace to make any edits, changes or additions to their titles before moving them to a KDP Print account.

This merge was foreshadowed by the elimination of CreateSpace’s author services. Publisher Service will be providing the same support for KDP as we did for CreateSpace, so self-publishers can still utilize our services for cover design, interior formatting and upload assistance.

Amazon is attempting to make the integration of CreateSpace into KDP a seamless process. There will not be much of a difference between the functions, services and abilities that were available on CreateSpace accounts once they are moved to KDP Print. The account and title setup is similar, viewing of sales reports, and overseas marketing options. The printing facility that produced the books for CreateSpace clients will remain the same once all accounts are under Kindle Direct Publishing. Customers will notice that the payment schedules and royalty fees will differ slightly once all titles are under KDP.

The final date of CreateSpace being completely removed from Amazon has not been decided, but Amazon encourages CreateSpace authors not to delay in transferring their titles to KDP. For information on the steps to moving your title from CreateSpace to KDP, follow https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/GSJULX3WGP36HQ3R .

Amazon KDP requires that authors must submit titles with ISBNs that are registered to the author’s name in the Books in Print Database. With our Publisher Package, we ensure that you receive an ISBN registered to your name as the publisher and the ISBN barcode file for the cover of your book. Wait A Minute! Not all ISBNs will work for Amazon??

Posted on: July 30th, 2018 by Publisher Services

You have decided that you want to self-publish and distribute your book(s), ebooks or DVDs through Amazon. Great! Amazon has little to no competition amongst online booksellers. It’s important to purchase an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) for your book product for discoverability online or in stores; most markets will require an ISBN to sell your book as well.

amazon isbn

There are many different ISBN offers, packages,  and information all over the web. Aside from making sure you are working with a legitimate authorized ISBN agent, you need to make sure that you are obtaining the correct type of ISBN to match your intended marketplaces, such as Amazon. But, how do you know which option is right for you?

Amazon has three different divisions in which you can use to distribute and market your books on their site: Amazon CreateSpace, Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing and Amazon Fulfillment (FBA). Each of these three divisions has set rules in regards to the ISBN that can be submitted by the author.

Amazon CreateSpace and Amazon KDP will only accept ISBNs that are registered to the name of the author/publisher that is creating an account. When purchasing an ISBN, it’s important to inquire of the company what will be the imprint name of the ISBN in Bowker’s Global Books in Print database. The Publisher Package ($129) provides an ISBN with  your company’s name identified as the registrant in the database. During the title setup for both Amazon CreateSpace and Amazon KDP, imprint name is verified against the Global Books in Print Database.  If an ISBN is entered which does not match, the following message is displayed:

“The ISBN entered for this Title ID is registered to another publisher in Bowker, the U.S. ISBN Agency, and we are unable to proceed with the current ISBN. Visit the ISBN section of your Project Homepage to view your ISBN options. Be sure to update your files to match any recent ISBN changes. If you believe that your ISBN was not accepted in error, please verify that the information provided within your Member Account is correct and then contact us so we may review further.”

To avoid receiving this error message and spending more money to correct your mistake, purchase an ISBN that properly identifies your company in Bowker’s database. Purchasing a Publisher Package ISBN enables your book to be sold through all three Amazon divisions and all marketplaces across the globe.

For Amazon Fulfillment, there are no regulations as to the registrant of the ISBN you have assigned to your book. The Self-Publisher Package (starting at$55) is the ideal solution and the indicated registrant in Bowker’s database is “Independent Publisher”.  When setting up book product information during the Amazon Fulfillment setup, you simply indicate “Independent Publisher” as the imprint name to receive approval. It is important to note that authors/publishers retains title ownership and copyright privileges for either ISBN package.

What To Do After You Obtain an ISBN

Posted on: June 26th, 2018 by Publisher Services

bookland isbn barcode

We commonly get asked about what self-publishers need to do after they receive their ISBN assignment(s).  Since an ISBN is simply a unique identifier representing a particular title and format, we encourage our clients to enter their “metadata” through our client portals. Metadata is core information about their books, such as title, author, price, subject, etc.   This information is automatically uploaded to Bowker’s Global Books in Print database.  All the major search engines, libraries and most bookstores (online and physical) pull data feeds from this database.   The first step to book DISCOVERY is keeping your metadata accurate and current.

The following are additional frequently asked questions;

Do I need an e-ISBN for my electronic books?

The internet is filled with misinformation and the term “e-isbn” is incorrect. An ISBN by definition is the proper term for the identifier for all physical and electronic books.  Just as a hardcover of a title requires a different ISBN from the paperback, the electronic version of a title requires an additional ISBN assignment.

If I change the price of my book do I need a new ISBN?

The ISBN does not change if an author changes the price.  Authors should log back into our client portal to change the price but the ISBN is the same.  However, if the price is included in the barcode image provided, a new barcode symbol will need to be ordered.  The only time a NEW ISBN is required is when there is a significant change in content from the previous version.

Does an ISBN provide Copyright protection?

The ISBN is completely separate from the Copyright system.  In the US, an author’s book is protected under copyright as soon as it is written.  Registering a copyright is used as a defensive action used if an author believes his/her content will likely be violated.
